Need a New Zealand passport photo that passes the first time? Upload your picture to our NZ passport photo editor. It crops your image to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA, Te Tari Taiwhenua) 3:4 format at 900 × 1200 px, centres your head, checks the background, and exports a digital passport photo NZ applicants can upload at passports.govt.nz.

NZ Passport Photo Size at a Glance

How to Make a New Zealand Passport Photo Online

  1. Open the NZ passport photo editor. Keep "New Zealand" selected. The tool sets a 3:4 ratio and a 900 × 1200 px output automatically.
  2. Upload your original picture. Choose a recent, clear colour photo taken in natural light against a plain, light wall. Your browser re-saves the image first, which strips EXIF data such as GPS coordinates.
  3. Wait for the automated check. Face detection and background analysis finish in under a minute. Keep this page open while the server aligns your head height and eye position.
  4. Review and download. The result screen shows your resolution, head-to-photo ratio, eye level, and background quality. Download the JPEG for your online application, or save it for printing.

Our secure server processes your photo, and the download link stays active for 7 days.

New Zealand Passport Photo Requirements

The DIA publishes official passport photo rules for online and paper applications. Its automated system checks every upload against these criteria:

3:4 Aspect Ratio and Pixel Size

New Zealand uses a vertical 3:4 format, not the square 2 × 2 inch US format. Online uploads must measure at least 900 × 1200 pixels and no more than 4500 × 6000 pixels. Our editor exports a clean 900 × 1200 px JPEG, so your file meets the minimum and keeps exact proportions.

Your head, from chin to top of hair, must fill 70% to 80% of the image height. Leave a clear margin above your hair and beside both shoulders.

Background and Contrast

The DIA requires a plain, uniform, light-coloured background. Stark white and dark backgrounds both weaken edge detection, so avoid them.

  • Use: pale grey, cream, light beige, or soft off-white
  • Avoid: dark backdrops, patterned wallpaper, brick, wood, doors, furniture, and other people
  • Stand 0.5 metres (1.5 feet) in front of the wall to prevent shadows behind your head and shoulders

Digital Passport Photo NZ Applications vs Printed Photos

Most New Zealanders apply online. Paper applications still apply to some overseas forms, emergency travel documents, and certain visa categories.

Online Applications (passports.govt.nz)

You upload one JPEG. The DIA checker scans it for:

  • A valid format (.jpg or .jpeg) and a file size between 250 KB and 5 MB
  • A 3:4 portrait ratio and at least 900 × 1200 pixels
  • Correct eye line alignment and facial symmetry
  • Natural skin tones, free of airbrushing and compression distortion

Printed Photos for Paper Submissions

If you apply by post or at an embassy counter, supply two identical prints that meet these rules:

  • Size them at exactly 35 mm wide by 45 mm high.
  • Print them on continuous-tone photo paper (dye sublimation or a professional lab). Offices reject prints from standard inkjet printers on copy paper.
  • Keep them free of creases, staple holes, smudges, and tape.

You can print your 900 × 1200 px file on a 4 × 6 inch photo card. Follow our guide on how to print passport photos for layout and sizing steps.

Tips for Taking Your NZ Passport Photo at Home

You do not need a studio or pharmacy. Follow these steps instead:

  • Skip the selfie. Front-facing lenses at arm's length distort your nose and hide your ears, and the DIA rejects these photos.
  • Ask someone else to shoot. Have them stand about 1.5 metres (5 feet) away.
  • Hold the camera at eye level. Keep it parallel to your face. Tilting it up or down changes your facial geometry and triggers a rejection.
  • Use diffuse daylight. Face an open window during the day so light falls evenly on both sides of your face.
  • Keep a neutral expression. Look straight into the lens with your eyes open and your mouth closed.
  • Wear contrasting clothes. Choose dark or medium tones that stand out against the pale wall. Avoid light tops, uniforms, and headwear.

Why the DIA Rejects a New Zealand Passport Photo

The DIA rejects thousands of photos each year for avoidable errors. Check your picture against this list before you submit it:

  • Smiling or visible teeth: Even a slight grin changes your mouth shape. The facial recognition software requires relaxed, sealed lips.
  • Glasses glare or heavy frames: Reflections hide your pupils, and thick frames cover your eyelids or brows. Remove your glasses if glare is a risk.
  • Hair across the face: Strands over your forehead, eyes, or cheeks block biometric mapping. Tie long hair back or tuck it behind your ears.
  • Shadows on your face or wall: Overhead lights darken the area under your nose, chin, and brow. Standing too close to the wall casts shadows behind your shoulders.
  • Filters and beautification: Instagram, TikTok, and smartphone smoothing filters alter your skin texture and proportions. The DIA rejects edited photos immediately.

FAQ: Passport Photo Questions Answered

What size is a New Zealand passport photo?

Online applications to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) need a portrait JPEG with a 3:4 aspect ratio. The file must measure between 900 × 1200 and 4500 × 6000 pixels and weigh between 250 KB and 5 MB. Paper applications need printed photos of 35 × 45 mm (width × height).

Can I take my own passport photo at home?

Yes, if someone else takes it. The DIA rejects selfies because front-facing lenses distort your face at close range. Ask a friend or family member to stand about 1.5 metres (5 feet) away and hold the camera at your eye level. Once you crop the shot to 3:4, it becomes a digital passport photo NZ applicants can upload.

What colour background does an NZ passport photo need?

The background must be plain and light, such as off-white, pale grey, or cream. The DIA warns against stark white and dark backgrounds. The wall must show no shadows, textures, patterns, or hanging objects.

Can I smile in my passport photo?

No. The DIA requires a neutral expression with your mouth closed and your eyes open, looking straight at the camera. Smiling, raised eyebrows, or visible teeth will fail the automated check.

Can I wear glasses in my passport photo?

Only if the frames are thin, the lenses show no glare or reflections, and a clear gap separates the frames from your eyes. Tinted lenses and sunglasses are not allowed. The DIA recommends removing your glasses to avoid rejection.

Is this an official New Zealand passport photo checker?

No. This tool crops your picture to 3:4 proportions (900 × 1200 pixels), checks head centring and eye level, and analyses background uniformity. The DIA runs its own automated checker during online submission, and a passport officer makes the final decision.

Can I use this NZ passport photo editor for a visa photo?

The editor outputs the same 3:4 format, but visa rules can differ. Check the Immigration New Zealand photo guidelines for your visa type before you upload.

Is it safe to make a New Zealand passport photo online?

Yes. Face detection and background checks run on a secure server over an encrypted connection, and your browser strips EXIF metadata before upload. Your result page expires after 7 days. Our privacy policy explains how we handle and retain data.
