Questions and answers
What size is a U.S. passport photo?
2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head measuring 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair. See the passport photo requirements for the full checklist.
Can I wear glasses in my passport photo?
No, unless you can't remove them for medical reasons and include a signed doctor's statement with your application. The passport photo requirements guide covers glasses, hats, and clothing.
Can I smile in my passport photo?
Yes. A natural smile or neutral expression is fine, as long as both eyes are open and your face is clearly visible.
What color should the background be?
Plain white or off-white, with no patterns, objects, or shadows.
Can I edit my photo or use a filter?
No. The Department of State doesn't accept photos changed with editing software, filters, or AI. Cropping and resizing to the required dimensions is fine.
Do you store my photos?
The passport photo editor uploads your photo to process it, and your result page and download link expire after 7 days. The privacy policy explains what we keep and for how long.
Do your tools cost anything?
No. All tools and guides are free, with no account needed.
Are you part of the government?
No. idphoto.us is an independent website, not affiliated with the U.S. Department of State or any other agency.
