Passport photo checker
Test passport photo rules in seconds with this free passport photo checker. Upload your photo, pick your country, and see a result for each rule. Your photo stays on your device.
How to test passport photo rules in three steps
- Pick your country. The checker loads that country's published photo rules.
- Upload your photo. Choose the exact file you plan to submit.
- Read your results. Each check shows a pass, a warning or a fail. Fix any failure, then check again.
What the passport photo checker tests
The checker compares your photo with the country's published rules and sorts the results into three groups.
- Exact checks are read straight from your file: file format, file size, pixel dimensions and the shape of the photo.
- Estimates come from face detection in your browser:
- exactly one face in the photo
- head size from chin to crown
- eye height
- space above your head and below your chin
- a level head that faces the camera
- open eyes and a closed mouth
- a plain, evenly lit background in the required color
- Checks for you are things software can't judge reliably, such as whether both ears need to be visible or whether your expression is acceptable. The checker lists them so you can look for yourself.
Turn on the guides to see where the checker found your eyes, chin and the estimated top of your head, with the allowed eye band shaded in.
Free passport photo checker: private and fast
This passport photo checker free to use works in your browser, so you do not need to install anything.
- Private: face detection runs on your device. The photo is not sent anywhere unless you press the fix button.
- Clear: every failed check shows what was measured, what is required and how to fix it.
- Visual: the guides show exactly where the checker found your face.
Passport photo validator: how to read your results
The passport photo validator gives each rule one of three results.
- Pass: the measurement meets the rule.
- Warning: the reading sits close to a limit. Check it by eye, and retake the photo if you are unsure.
- Fail: the measurement breaks the rule. Follow the fix tip, then check again.
Test passport photo rules for your country
Test passport photo rules for the U.S. or any of the 60+ other supported countries. Choose your country, such as the U.K., Australia or Ireland, if it appears in the list. The checker only tests the rules that country publishes, so it works as a digital passport photo checker for size, format and file size, as well as a biometric photo check for head size and pose.
Diversity visa photo checker
Looking for a diversity visa photo checker? Diversity visa entry photos follow their own digital rules, which differ from the 2 × 2 inch passport photo. Confirm your entry photo against the official instructions before you submit. The U.S. visa photo tool covers visa photos.
U.S. passport photo rules at a glance
The U.S. Department of State sets the rules in its passport photo guidance. The passport picture checker measures most of them.
- Size: 2 × 2 inches.
- Head height: between 1 and 1⅜ inches, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
- Background: plain white or off-white, with no shadows.
- Pose: face the camera directly with both eyes open.
- Expression: neutral, or a natural smile.
- Glasses: none.
- Date: taken in the last 6 months.
What the checker cannot judge
The checker can't see everything. Glare on glasses, hair covering part of your face, uneven skin lighting and focus are not fully assessed, and a computer vision estimate can be off by a few percent. Test passport photo results are a guide. Use them to catch problems before you submit, not as an official answer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test passport photo rules online?
Pick your country, upload the photo you plan to submit, and read the results. Each rule shows as a pass, a warning or a fail. If a check fails, fix the problem and test the photo again.
Is this passport photo checker free?
Yes. You can check your photo for free. You only upload your photo if you press the button to fix it, which sends it to the passport photo editor.
Is my photo uploaded when I check it?
No. The check runs in your browser using on-device face detection, so your photo stays on your device. The first check downloads the detection models (about 16 MB), but your photo isn't sent with them. Your photo is only uploaded if you press the button to fix it, which sends it to the passport photo editor.
Is my passport photo acceptable if it passes every check?
Not necessarily, and no tool can promise that. The checker measures what software can measure reliably, and lists what you need to check yourself. The agency that receives your application makes the final decision.
Why are some results marked as estimates?
File size, format and pixel dimensions are read directly from the file, so those results are exact. Head height, eye position, pose and background are measured with computer vision, which is usually within a few percent. Readings close to a limit show as warnings rather than failures.
How accurate is the passport photo validator?
It is exact for file format, file size and pixel dimensions. It is an estimate for head height, eye line, pose and background. Use it to catch problems early, not as an official answer.
Which countries can I check against?
The same countries the passport photo editor supports: the U.S. and more than 60 others. Pick a country and the checker loads its published photo rules. It only checks the rules that country publishes.
Can I use it as a diversity visa photo checker?
Diversity visa entry photos follow their own digital rules, which differ from the 2 × 2 inch passport photo. Check which rules the tool loads for your selection, and confirm your entry photo against the official instructions. The U.S. visa photo tool covers visa photos.
Can I test a passport photo taken with my phone?
Yes. Upload the photo file you plan to submit. Use the original file, not a screenshot, so the size and detail reading are correct.
Is a passport a photo ID?
Yes. A passport is a government-issued photo ID. This tool does not check your ID. It checks the photo you plan to submit with your application.
What if my photo fails?
Each failed check says what was measured, what is required and how to fix it. Retake the photo, or press the fix button to have the photo cropped and sized by the passport photo editor.
